Six inches is not a round number. It is the answer to a specific question: what length clears a full squat, holds its shape through a hip hinge, and still looks right standing still.
Start with the movement. At the bottom of a deep squat, the knee is at its most bent, and the fabric around it has to fold without catching or binding. A length that clears the knee through that full range means nothing pulls, nothing rides, and nothing distracts you mid set. The same is true in a hip hinge or a lunge, where the crease at the hip closes and the fabric there needs somewhere to go. Six inches gives the leg room to move through both of those positions cleanly, without excess fabric bunching at either end.
Coverage matters too, and not just for comfort. Enough fabric on the thigh means the short carries weight on the hip properly, sits where it should under a loaded belt, and does not shift around during sprint work or lateral movement. That is a fit question as much as a movement one.
Then there is proportion, which is a different kind of reasoning entirely, and just as real. A short is not just measured against the leg, it is seen against the whole body, and that changes with height. On a longer leg, a shorter inseam can look overly brief, the leg reads as mostly exposed. On a shorter leg, a longer inseam can sit further down the thigh than intended and read as heavier than it should. Six inches is the length we found holds good proportion across the widest range of builds, tall and short both, without needing a different cut for each.
None of this is a knock on a five or a seven inch short. Plenty of men have a strong, settled preference for one or the other, and they usually already know why. This is simply the reasoning behind the number we chose, for the range of motion it protects and the proportion it holds across most builds.
